During foil production, cross section profile variations cannot be avoided. These variations are often intensified during further treatment steps, e.g. during coating or printing and can add up (by thousands of layers) to severe differences in diameter at slitting and rewinding.
These differences can be compensated by highly elastic foils. But this is not possible with many other foil materials. For these, a rotational degree of freedom is required. This is the only way to achieve a kinematic and force balance in winding.
